At present, NASA is holding it's own, as far as the job situation, but there is talk of private contractors moving into the area, to take advantage of the enormous pool of technical job knowledge available. 6,500 jobs have been added to the low of 500 at Ellington Air Force Base, for a total of 7,000 jobs. Ellington was going to be shut down just a few years ago. Medical, chemical and port industry jobs are continually being added in the area, so the Clear Lake area's economy is not as dependent upon NASA as some would think. Clear Lake benefits greatly from the petrochemical industry. The University of Houston Campus, at Clear Lake is planning to expand by adding freshmen and sophomore classes.
