Ellington was going to be shut down just a few years ago. Medical, chemical and port industry jobs are continually being added in the area, so the Clear Lake area's economy is not as dependent upon NASA as some would think. Clear Lake benefits greatly from the petrochemical industry. The University of Houston Campus, at Clear Lake is expanding to add freshmen and sophomore classes.
